Off-Season Preparation for OUTBOARDS and STERNDRIVES

Not using the boat much in the cooler months to come? Here are some tips on how to avoid problems from lack of use.

Battery: Batteries should be clean, have clean and tight connections and be in a well-ventilated compartment. Clean the battery with water/baking soda solution; it will neutralize the battery acid that accumulates on top of your battery. Leave your onboard charger plugged in or put a trickle charger on the battery monthly. Keeping your batteries fully charged will insure maximum service life. Spray the terminals with battery terminal protection spray. Use INOX BATTERY CONDITIONER to prolong the life and increase the efficiency of your battery. Our assistant service manager, Mark Taylor, has a battery that is working well for over 11 years because he uses INOX battery conditioner. On-board chargers can be purchased at Boat Tune for only $39.99. A great option, so you never have to worry about whether or not your battery is fully charged and ready to go.

Fuel: Non-Ethanol fuel? - keep the tank full. Ethanol fuel? - keep the tank empty. Add Stabil or other quality fuel conditioner to your fuel tank. Run the engine so the treated fuel runs throughout your fuel system. If you have a fuel valve: turn the fuel valve off and run the engine until it runs out of fuel.

Lower Unit: Check and/or change your gear oil in lower unit. Water will drain out first if present. Water or milky oil indicates you have a leak. Repair any leaks before you put the unit up for storage.

Make sure you refill the oil from the bottom to the top to drive out any air. Make sure to use the manufacturers recommended gear oil. Some units take synthetic gear lube and will suffer excessive wear or fail if regular mineral based gear oil is used. Contact Boat Tune Parts for FREE do-it-yourself advice.

Engine: Check all fluids. (Oil, power steering, coolant) Change engine oil now to prevent a layer of dirt from forming in the bottom of the oil pan. Boat Tune now stocks oil change kits containing manufacturer’s oil and oil filter at discounted prices. Do not overfill. Overfilling can result in engine running problems and engine failure.

Anodes: Inspect all power head anodes. These are much more important than anodes on the lower unit. If these anodes go un-serviced you may likely need a new cylinder head and/or cylinder block!

Lubrication: Grease engine fittings, spray entire motor with silicone, T-9, or INOX MX3 anti-corrosion lubricant.

Trailer: I go longer distances when trailering so I repack my bearings every year. If you only go short distances you may want to repack bearings less frequently. Oil bath hubs just need to be checked for fluid level and color. Brakes should be inspected every year and certain parts need to be lubricated for proper operation.

Spray the galvanized and steel parts with T-9 or LANOX HEAVY DUTY MX4 anti-corrosion Lanolin lubricant.
